Venue: Dadhikot V.D.C
Organizer: NeLSA KSL chapter
NeLSA KSL chapter; on the ocassion of 43rd World Environment Day organized an awareness as well as cleaniess campaign. At that event the students as well as the teachers and the staffs were engaged in cleaning the area where the institution was situated i.e. .Dadhikot VDC. This program was new of its kind in KSL for cleaning campaigns were not initiated before. The program started with the cleaning of the KSL premise itself.
Objective:
This program was initiated with the purpose of making the residents of Dadhikot VDC aware about the importance of clean and hygienic environment. As a result of the cleaning campaign people will have a different outlook towards keeping the public places clean and will make an effort in keeping it so not only on the cleaning day but throughout the year.
Activities Conducted:
Basically, the program was conducted like a regular cleaning campaign, where the participants were supposed to clean the area that was divided for the cleaning purpose. Alongside the camping a small rally too took place supporting the theme of the 43rd world environment day namely "rise your voice, not the see level". Also at the end of the program an informal talk program was arranged where the teachers, organizers also the residents spoke about the program.
The cleaning campaign began early in the morning of the 43rd World Environment Day i.e. 5th June 2014. Firstly all the organizers and the participants of the campaign gathered at KathmanduSchool of law. Gloves, face masks and also a number of brooms were then provided to the participants and as per the schedule, the program began at 8 am. Initially the premise of KSL itself was cleaned and then the campaigners moved out with the motive of cleaning the whole of the designated area. The participants were also provided with flyers that contained quotes and themes related to environment which they were to display throughout the cleaning process in order to spread consciousness about the importance and significance of environment. The participants were led by a banner which stated the motto of the environment day which was "Rise Your Voice, Not The Sea Level" and also another motto which supported the cleaning campaign which was "Plant Trees, Save Mountains, Live In A Healthy Environment".
Similarly, sacks and dustbins were placed at various places in order to gather the collected waste for disposal. With this the cleaning camping took its rapid course and the program moved forward. Basically, all the non-biodegradable wastes that were found at the designated areas were collected, as such wastes are the major factors which create pollution and hamper the hygiene of the inhabitants nearby. Besides this the protruding bushes of useless grasses were slashed and burned so that the area would look neat and well managed. After a good amount of waste was collected it was gathered in a certain area. The initial idea was to collect it in one place and then dispose it later but since feasible methods of disposal of those wastes could not be arranged the waste materials were burned.
Whilst the cleaning was going on it was realized by the organizers that it would to be better to separate the wastes according to their nature so that the burning and the disposing process would be simpler. Thus with this idea the biodegradable waste, waste from glass products and the non-biodegradable waste were kept separately. Once the waste was picked up the road was also swept which made the area look even cleaner. The cleaning process went on for the next one and half hours i.e. until 9:30 am. The final point of the campaign was the 'barahi temple' of Dadhikot VDC. Once the campaigners reached there all the waste collected were disposed off. With this the cleaning program came to an end.
The next part of the program was the informal gathering where some talk program was to take place. All the participants gathered in a public ground and short talks on their view about the program were given by some of the participants. A resident of the Dahdikot VDC gave a short speech on how she looked forward to the program once the notice was out and was excited to take part in it as she believed that it was a much-needed program for the welfare of the village. She also mentioned that she along with the other residents would look forward to such programs which would help in making their society a better and healthier one. Also an inspiring speech was given by one of the personal of the police force who was there to provide security during the program. He also mentioned that he and the other personals of the police force felt glad that they could be a part of it. Finally the concluding speech for the program was given by the Executive director of Kathmandu School of law, Prof. Geeta Pathak thanking the organizers and everyone who participate in it. With this the program came to an end and everyone returned to the college premises for the refreshments.
Concluding Remarks:
This cleaning campaign organized by NeLSA KSL chapter was a successful one. The objectives of the campaign were met and it also managed to include not only the students but also the teachers, the staffs and also some of the residents of the VDC. Each participant showed full enthusiasm in cleaning the VDC and also promised to keep it so in the future. The program was much appreciated by everyone and NeLSA was encouraged to conduct more of such programs. The one negative remark that the program received was that there should have been better methods of disposal of waste other than burning it which was not hygienic in itself. Besides this all the other aspects were said to be satisfactory and thus the program was an effective one.
